Most men buy shirts by color. Fabric decides whether you're comfortable or sweating through it by noon. India has three hard seasons, so one fabric won't cover all of them.
Cotton: the daily default
Cotton is breathable, soft, and easy to maintain. It handles office hours, travel, and repeated washing. Oxford and poplin cotton hold their shape under a blazer and still work alone. If you're buying one formal shirt, buy cotton.
Best for: office, meetings, everyday wear, all seasons except peak summer.
Linen: the summer fix
Linen is loosely woven, so air passes through and heat escapes. It stays cooler than cotton in humid and dry heat alike. It wrinkles, and that is normal. Treat the creases as part of the look, not a defect.
Best for: April to September, outdoor events, casual offices, day weddings.
Satin: the evening shirt
Satin has a smooth, slightly glossy finish that photographs well and looks dressed up without a jacket. It traps more heat than cotton or linen, so wear it after sunset or in air-conditioned places.
Best for: parties, dinners, evening functions, festive occasions.

What to buy first
• One wardrobe: 3 cotton, 2 linen, 1 satin.
• Start with solid navy, white, and grey. These match everything.
• Add checks or stripes after the basics.
Fit check
Fabric won't save a bad fit. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, and you should be able to pinch about 2 inches of fabric at your waist. Check the size chart before ordering.
Bottom line: cotton for work, linen for heat, satin for nights. Pick by occasion and season, not by what's on sale.
